"I, Juan de Pareja, was born into slavery early in the seventeenth century. I am not certain of the year."

Enjoy this tale of a slave, a famous painter, the art, baroque life, and a long held secret.

De Trevio, lets her protagonist Juan de Pareja (the actual slave to the famed Spanish artist Diego de Silva y Velazquez) take you traveling on a wonderful historical adventure.

I loved the development of Juan's character.  It was unpredictable, moving, romantic, and heart-wrenching.  He was dedicated to his master to the fullest, yet torn by love, love for the art.  You cannot read this without checking out all the painting of Velazquez afterward, especially the portrait of Pope Innocent X.

Happy Reading
